Use a/an for general or first mention; the for specific or known items

English has two articles: the indefinite article 'a/an' and the definite article 'the'. Use a/an when introducing something new or non-specific; use the when the noun is already known to both speaker and listener; use no article (zero article) for general statements with plural or uncountable nouns.
