When to Use Fractions and Decimals

  • Simple fractions: half (1/2), quarter (1/4), third (1/3).
  • Other fractions: cardinal + ordinal. Two thirds (2/3), three quarters (3/4).
  • Decimals: point + individual digits. 3.5 = three point five.
  • Percentages: number + percent. 50% = fifty percent.
  • With nouns: half of the, a quarter of, two thirds of.

How to Form Fractions and Decimals

Affirmative (+)

Fraction/decimal + of + noun; Noun + is + fraction/decimal

Negative (-)

Same structure with negation

Question (?)

What fraction/percentage...?

💡 Half = 1/2 (not 'one second'). Quarter = 1/4 (not 'one fourth' usually).

Examples of Fractions and Decimals

Two thirds of the students passed.

Two third of the students passed.

Plural: thirds (not third) for 2/3.

The price is 3.99 (three point nine nine).

The price is 3.99 (three point ninety-nine).

Say each digit after the point.

Half of the cake is gone.

A half of the cake is gone.

Half (not a half) before 'of'.
