intermediate

When to Use Adverb Position

  • Frequency adverbs (always/often/sometimes) before main verb, after be: She always works; She is always late.
  • Manner adverbs (quickly/well) usually after the verb/object: She speaks English well.
  • Time/place usually at end: We met yesterday at the park.
  • Adverb order: Manner + Place + Time (He sang beautifully at the concert last night).
  • Sentence adverbs (probably/definitely) before main clause: She will probably come.

How to Form Adverb Position

Affirmative (+)

Place adverb according to type (frequency before verb; manner after verb/object; time/place end)

Negative (-)

Negation stays with auxiliary; adverb placement rules still apply

Question (?)
