When to Use Adverb Position
- •Frequency adverbs (always/often/sometimes) before main verb, after be: She always works; She is always late.
- •Manner adverbs (quickly/well) usually after the verb/object: She speaks English well.
- •Time/place usually at end: We met yesterday at the park.
- •Adverb order: Manner + Place + Time (He sang beautifully at the concert last night).
- •Sentence adverbs (probably/definitely) before main clause: She will probably come.
How to Form Adverb Position
Affirmative (+)
Place adverb according to type (frequency before verb; manner after verb/object; time/place end)
Negative (-)
Negation stays with auxiliary; adverb placement rules still apply
Question (?)
Place adverb after subject/aux in questions: Do you often travel?
💡 With be, frequency adverbs follow be; with modals/aux, frequency adverbs follow modal/aux.

Frequency before main verb.

✗He always is on time.
With be, adverb follows be.
✓They played quietly in the room yesterday.
✗They quietly played in the room yesterday (less natural).
